If I could sprinkle fairy dust on the US government & transform it to my liking, what would it look like? Every time I ask that question, my wish list gets longer:
Abortion: Let voters determine the law state by state. Stop fed funding to Planned Parenthood. No FOCA; med workers should not be required to perform abortions.
Accountability: Pass a ‘pay for pay for play’ law making it a crime for Congressmen, their families, and staff to benefit financially from federal legislation they passed.
Agriculture: Stop subsidies. Let the free market rule. Repeal Food Safety Mod Act.
Banking: Reinstate Glass-Steagall. Don’t force banks to take fed money. No fed ownership of commercial banks. Sell stock in nationalized banks on the open market and return proceeds to U.S. Treasury.
Borders: Finish the #*&$#* wall between the US and Mexico.
Budget: Return unspent stimulus money to the Treasury. President should have line item veto power. Prevent inflation by not overspending. Return budget surpluses (we used to have them) to taxpayers.
Candidates: Congress should require those running for federal office to provide proof of citizenship, school records, and a resume and to pass a security background check.
CIA: Investigate and prosecute leakers of classified docs. Stop leaking. Allow enhanced interrogation, but not torture; we are to be feared, but we are the good guys.
Commerce: Keep Census here, outside the WH.
Communications: Repeal Cyber Security Act. No bailouts for newspapers. Let talk radio talk. Let NPR go find its own dinero.
Constitution: No more judicial activist appointees to the Supreme Court. Enforce existing gun laws. No assault weapon ban. No application of non-US law (such as sharia) to US citizens or companies.
Courts: Make fed prosecutors elected, not appointed.
Defense: Fire George Soros’ friend Rosa Brooks. Cancel the cutbacks. Proceed with the missile defense system. Stop foreign outsourcing of military aircraft.
Economy: Federal policy should promote growth, a strong dollar, and a low rate of inflation, rather than redistribution of wealth. Wages and prices should be determined by a free market, not controlled by some guy behind a desk in DC.
Education: All states to opt out of No Child Left Behind. No fed guarantee of free college tuition; keep loan programs and GI Bill as they are. Return K-8 public ed to state/local control. Let the voucher system happen. Let teachers opt out of NEA. Turn history teachers upside down & pour water up their noses until they agree to teach good things about democracy and capitalism. Fire Kevin Jennings.
Elections: New federal law demanding proof of citizenship from voters; feds to audit ACORN; enforce contribution limits. Require proof of citizenship and academic transcripts from candidates for federal office. Redo 2010 Census if done under Obama White House control.
Enemy combatants: Keep them out of US prisons, inside Gitmo. Establish a separate court system to try them. Establish by law that enemy combatants have no US constitutional rights.
Energy: open up the continental shelf to drilling. Build new nuclear energy plants. Cut out the subsidy for gasohol. Restrict fed money for ‘green’ energy to market-rate projects while pursuing an ‘all of the above’ energy policy. ’Drill here, drill now, pay less.’
Environment: Can cap and trade. Put the kibosh on CAFE standards. Replace Carol Brownout with a patriot. As gas prices go up, let the marketplace provide incentives for conservation. Continue enforcement of environmental standards for energy producers, with the intent of making domestic energy production safe, clean, and profitable.
Executive Orders: Pass laws restricting what a President can do using EO’s.
Ex-Presidents: Prohibit ex US Presidents from doing consulting work for foreign goverments and from working as a domestic lobbyist. Call it the Billary Law. Audit Clinton and BHO. Help Jimmah retire to the Arab country of his choice.
Fannie/Freddie: Privatize them. Get back the most recent infusion of fed $ and give them no more. Let the free market work.
FBI: Go investigate the ‘terrorist training camps on US soil’ that Michael Savage keeps going on about. If they really exist, shut them down & prosecute accordingly.
FDA: Let states decide whether or not is is legal to sell the morning-after pill.
Gay marriage: I don’t care what those people do, as long as they don’t harm children.
Healthcare: Deny Medicaid to noncitizens. Prohibit government rationing of access to care. Stop the federal medical record ID program; establish by law a medical right to privacy. Make private health insurance deductible to the individual rather than to the employer, so that it’s affordable and portable, but do not guarantee a ‘right’ to healthcare. Limit recovery for malpractice lawsuits, so that malpractice insurance rates don’t drive physicians out of business. Allow sale of health insurance across state lines.
Homeland Security: Fire Janet Napolitano and replace her with a patriot. Deny visas to citizens of countries sponsoring terrorism. Try foreign combatants in military tribunals, not the US court system. Keep Guantanamo open, with continued high standards for treatment of prisoners. Profile terror suspects and enforce up to date no-fly and no-entry lists. Deport illegal aliens.
Housing: Repeal the Community Reinvestment Act. Remind everyone that there is no right to affordable housing. Continue to allow mortgage interest deduction, but otherwise get the federal government out of housing. Privative Fan/Fred/FHA. Stop subsidizing mortgage holders who fall behind. Let foreclosures happen. Give investors a sunsetted tax break to move oversupply out of the marketplace.
Illegal aliens: Enforce immigration laws. Develop treaties with various countries (especially Mexico) whereby the US can deport noncitizens held in US jails and prisons to incarceration in their country of origin.
Immigration: No amnesty. Demand proof of citizenship and/or valid visa for entry to public school or use of other taxpayer-funded services, to get a driver’s license, to get married, to appear in court, to sign a lease or contract, to open a bank or brokerage account, and to rent or buy property. Enforce the law; deport illegals. Demand proof of citizenship and/or visa from arrestees; deport illegals. Stop immigration from terrorist-friendly nations, such as Somalia. Increase legal H1B immigration for skilled workers such as computer geeks from India. Develop legal guest worker program for less skilled workers. Pressure Mexico to develop its economy and contain narcoterrorism while continuing to provide us with affordable vacations, cute waiters and lawn care specialists.
Industry: Sell stock of nationalized car and other companies on the open market; return proceeds of sale to the U.S. Treasury.
Insurance: Regulate the industry while encouraging it to develop new, more flexible forms of private coverage. Allow no ‘public option’.
Interpol: Rescind the executive order giving it the ability to investigate, detain and prosecute Americans on US soil. Make FOIA apply to Interpol activities.
Investigations: Congress should appoint special commission to determine causes of 2008 financial meltdown and to investigate Senators Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson for potential malfeasance in oversight positions. Investigate Senators Reid and Pelosi for pork barrel deals and prosecute accordingly. By all means, investigate George Soros & prosecute accordingly.
Justice Department: Replace Eric Holder with a patriot. Focus resources on going after crooked politicians, drug dealers, potential terrorists, and financial criminals, not conservatives. Clone 9th District fed prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald & put his clones to work as prosecutors. Keep the new prison in Thomsen, Illinois open to house convicted corruptocrats. Prosecute the Black Panther and Muslim Brotherhood cases.
Labor Dept.: Keep minimum wage low to encourage employment.
Medicare/Medicaid: Give recipients vouchers/tax deductions to purchase their own (private) insurance, so that physicians and hospitals receive full reimbursement for services provided to the poor and elderly.
Mental healthcare/homelessness: For patients whose mental illness makes them a dangers to themselves and others, state/fed government courts should put them in psychiatric institutions for longterm care. Independent third-party watchdog groups should monitor psychiatric facilities for safety and quality of care.
Multiculturalism: Enforce hate crime law to give Christians and Jews equal status with Buddhists, Muslims, agnostics, Wiccans, and atheists. Enforce hate crime law for minority attacks on Caucasians and gay attacks on heterosexuals. Let schools and communities determine how to handle public acknowledgement of religious holidays and prayer in school. Keep ‘one nation under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance. Formally establish English as the sole national language. Keep English a requirement for citizenship and getting a driver’s license.
National service: There should be no national service other than the military. Congress should audit any ‘national service’ already in place for malfeasance. Permanently disband/defund Americorps and ACORN.
Nationalization: New law to prevent federal ownership of banks and private companies. Divest federal holdings from car makers and other companies and financial institutions. Let bankruptcy happen.
Privacy: There should be no electronic national ID card, electronic medical record, or other means of tracking location and activities of citizens.
SEC: Bring derivatives under regulation. Appoint an SEC chief who does his/her job.
Social Security: Demand proof of citizenship or valid work visa to get a SSN. Make each account a portable investment account, not a transfer payment.
Speech: Keep it free. Resist/repeal Cyber Security Act. No bailouts for newspapers. Let talk radio talk. Let NPR go find its own dinero. No ‘Fairness Doctrine’ or FCC regulation of political content on the airwaves.
State Department: Reaffirm our commitment to democracy. Denounce tyranny. Honor our allies. Give no more money to Gaza/Hamas or the IMF.
States: No fed bailouts for state worker pensions.
Taxation: Cut capital gains tax; reinstate charitable deduction to previous level. Institute a flat tax in place of income tax. Repeal the ‘death tax’. Reduce corporate income tax to a rate competitive with that of other growing economies.
Term limits: Yes. There are pastures waiting for the cloven hooves of Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Dodd, Feinstein, Boxer, Shumer, Specter et al.
Trade: Return to free trade. Include Colombia.
Transportation Security: Appoint a TSA chief who profiles terrorists and keeps air travelers safe, without humiliating them.
Transparency: Pass new ‘anti Trojan horse’ law requiring federal legislation, including conference versions, to be posted on the internet for a reasonable length of time and discussed in Congressional committees before being voted into law. Require bills and law to be summarized so that they are intelligible without crossreferencing to prior law.
Treasury: Replace Timmy G. and fill top positions with competent patriots who have paid all their taxes. Audit TARP fund disbursements and prosecute as appropriate. Taxpayers should know where their money went. Congress should deny The Treasury Secretary the power to limit executive compensation at private companies, even if those with partial government ownership.
UN: Withdraw funding until it restricts membership to democratic nations.
Unions: Keep secret ballot. No fed bailouts for pension funds. Disallow unionization of government workers.
VA: Fed should fully fund med/rehab for vets.
White House: Employ an experienced protocol officer to make sure contact with foreign heads of state includes appropriate press conferences and gifts. Hugo Chavez could use a copy of the U.S. Constitution.
